Now 50% More Unemployed!

I re-posted some of my Rules for Unemployment yesterday on Flickr for my friends that are now getting laid off left and right from their media and tech jobs (sorry!).  I made these back in 2001 when I got laid off for the first time and found myself with all the time in the world on my hands:

1. Leave your apt before noon every day.
2. Exercise every day (works well with #1)
3. No drinking before 5pm.
4. No watching TV / no <strike>reading blogs</strike> wasting time on blogs before 5pm (except during lunch).
5. No taking taxis.
6. No eating meals when drunk.

Anyway, was talking about this with someone yesterday and realized that in the 10 years I’ve been in NYC (!), I’ve been unemployed just about 50% of the time (!!!).  Check out the math:

2 years Jupiter
1 year Vndigo
2 years Google
1 year = MTV + a/c
—-
5 years of working

1 year pre-ITP (post 9-11
2 years @ ITP
1 year dodgeball post-ITP
1 year post a/c
—
5 years of NO JOB!

…  And I’m not sure whether to be embarassed or proud of this.  Other metrics worth measuring (and related to my constant state of unemployment):  number of days surfed this summer (20!), number of days skiied in last 3 years (100+), number of countries hit in past 3 years (7?), number of classes taught (4 @ NYU, 3 high school), number of startups (1.5).  :)
