This conversation seems to come up over and over again and this is one of the better arguments against the “Twitter is the new Google” bandwagon.
btw, I’m kind of one the fence for this… I search Google for most things and Twitter for a small (yet growing) subset of everything else (the same way I search Flickr for images over Google)
I do think that once Twitter search adds some social filters (e.g. only show results from friends / followers / friends of followers) then things become 100x more interesting.
I’ve been dreaming up everything from social-TV apps to mini city-guides that could we could rapidly prototyp using Twitter as content management system and some Twitter search API to drop content onto a bunch of different types of screens, both big and small.
